Yesterday I spent a good five hours experimenting with my themes, dockers and window layouts, and discovered some new stuff that will help workflow and metering. I've been using Reaper a couple of hours a week for two years, and I'm only just starting to make recordings that are approaching the same ballpark as the original idea (I try to do stoner/doom/post rock). Reaper's curve is just a bit steeper and longer. Having said that, all proper DAWs have some sort of frustrating learning curve, and get in the way of making music in the beginning. The result is that it's a slower start: You have to invest more time in learning about its features, developing your own workflows, and adding your own VST instruments. So you're probably going to spend a lot more time configuring it and customising it than any other DAW. There's no way he would persevere with Reaper. honestly, the Minilab is 80 new, which will get you the midi controller AND Live Lite for what you’d get Live for from Ableton alone. the MPK does NOT come with Live, the Arturia (and probably some competitors, but again, not the MPK) comes with a free copy of Ableton Live Lite. Ditto for my bass player - he just likes printed tabs, and refuses to even try to get into recording life is too short, he says. sorry, i mistook the MPK for the Arturia MiniLab MkII. I've got a friend who got Ableton Live Lite, and its restrictions actually suit him better, because he doesn't like tech and just dabbles. If you want the DAW to get out of the way as quickly as possible, and have little interest in learning more than you absolutely have to about your DAW, then Cakewalk is a good option for some people, just as Garageband is suitable for preteens to make loops and beats, and Audacity is a good choice for people who aren't confident with computers. And the integration between the two is very cool. They also have their own simple collaborative DAW that runs in your browser, which is also free. Someone recommended Cakewalk, which makes no sense to me It's just a very deep well with a huge (and growing) supportive community, written by a tiny team (two guys, basically). Another example: a few days ago asked me if Reaper could turn the pages of his sheet music on his tablet, and I was able to write that in 30 minutes, because Reaper is heavily programmable. It's size, speed, stability, media handling, routing, and support for workflow customization are the best on the market, at any price, all with no DRM and constant free updates.įor instance, they just had a point release (6.24) a few weeks ago that added a major new feature, razor edits, which in any other DAW would warrant a major version number increase and probably an upgrade fee. But once you get past the basic features that essentially all DAWs have, Reaper leaves it in the dust. Cakewalk is prettier (any DAW is) and probably more intuitive. At the beginner level, they're going to seem comparable. Someone recommended Cakewalk, which makes no sense to me, unless you literally can't afford $60. Reaper kicks the shit out of what you'll get there. Those versions of Ableton and Studio One are both crippled. We'd love to hear what you have produced with Reaper, but please post it in the weekly sticky.
